Falling Behind

Falling Behind

Posted on 12. Jan, 2010 by Mike Key in Ramblings

Under the advice of my wife (blaming someone else) I write all of my articles in MS Word for easy proofing before uploading them here to MikeKey.com Well on Sunday my hard drive failed. It has a head error, which means it’s not going to be working ever again. And I can’t really justify the data recovery cost, because the only data I’m loosing is 4 articles for this week. So with that being said, this will be my shortest post ever. I just wanted to let anyone know who was checking out my blog, that this is not the norm.

Let this be a lesson, if you’re running a blog, leave your articles as drafts in wordpress. Or use a program like drop box. I do have a desktop PC which is my main PC, but I like writing on the laptop from anywhere around the house or town.

I’ll have some of my stuff up by Thursday. Thanks for understanding.

    Mike:
We have a policy that all drafts are saved within the WordPress system so they’re accessible from anywhere the cloud is accessible. I guess inadvertently, we are protected from what happened to you also. Sorry to hear it. Hope you can recover quickly.

Exaclty. Anything that is stored online is (up to some degree) safer than being stored on a hard drive – not to mention accessible from almost anywhere else.

However, that’s not the only reason Microsoft Word, in particular, is bad for making posts. Rich text editors like Microsoft Word have their own way configuring the letters that is different from WordPress – therefore, when you copy and paste your posts into the WordPress text editor, it is likely any formatting and breaks can mess up.

WordPress does have an in-built feature to correct stuff like this, however, for the benifit of your blog, it is not only good to type in WordPress Editor from the start, but in the HTML mode, not the Visual one. That way you can see every line of code that is effecting your text and keep everything under control.

Even if you do use MS, once you’re finished an article, why not copy and paste it into WordPress and set a date to publish in the future rather than publishing them manually, at-the-moment? Or were they not completely done?
