Fatties Don’t Climb Mountains

Last time I checked, no fat guys have made it to the top of Mount Everest, and that, my friends, is a problem for me. You see, since I came home in August from my summer adventure I’ve been addicted to energy drinks and junk food. Most of the time my breakfast would consist of  Mountain Dew, some M&Ms and a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. (That’s high-style living!)

I’ve been packing on the pounds, and I’m ashamed to admit I went from 150lbs to 175lbs, almost pushing 180lbs. I’ve been jamming all this junk into my veins thinking it’s keeping me sharp and on my game. With trying to start a new business, launch my personal brand and blog, and taking on consulting gigs all at the same time I need the CAFFEINE. In reality, this crap isn’t helping my game any. I’ve noticed a complete dwindling supply of creativity. Just look at my blog, my posts are getting less and less frequent.

To top it all off, this crap has some serious side effects to your health such as tooth decay, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Constant sugar rushes from energy drinks are a major factor in the development of Type II diabetes. Evidence is starting to come out that high levels of sugar can even cause some neurological disorders.

As a entrepreneur, one should be conscience of their health and their body. When you feel your best, you’ll often give your best. A couple of years ago after a breakup with a long-term girlfriend I did a major detox. I unplugged for a whole month. No internet, no TV. I also gave up all the junk food and soda and started eating healthy and began jogging every day. All the TV and Internet time I replaced with reading up on all kinds of different things on self help and success. My mind was so sharp, and I was able to think clearer than ever.

Why did I stop? Well I got distracted by another girl. Go figure.

So being a fat fatty isn’t helping my business, and it isn’t helping my personal brand either. Ninja’s are not round. They are stealthy, agile and dangerous. And well, for the adventure seeker part, like I said, I am pretty sure there haven’t been any fat guys able to climb to the top of Everest.

Are you neglecting your health? What bad habits do you need to change right now to improve your life?

I’m declaring right here, publicly: I’m going to kick the caffeine starting today. I’m going to cut back on the unhealthy foods and start a work out program.

I’ll keep you all posted so you can keep me accountable.

I have found most networking events are either where there is caffeine or alcohol and need to find the strength not to partake in either. Caffeine is tough to break cold turkey, tell us how you plan to get through the initial week.

By not having any soda or caffeine. Today I had a salad for lunch and I’m drinking lot’s of water.

I will admit that I thought the title was lame when you asked me, but I do like the post. (I guess in context, it worked better than I thought it would.) OK, now drop that cappuccino and give me 20!

    Hi,

just a hint, I’ve found the following suggestion on Tim Ferris Blog quite helpful to cut some weight, and develop a healthy diet habbit:
    http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/04/06/how-to-lose-20-lbs-of-fat-in-30-days-without-doing-any-exercise/

It’s a short and to the point advice that works and does not require much thought and effort to maintain.

    Cheers
    -Richard

Thanks Richard, I’ve actually looked at a few of Tim’s great posts on fitness. I am actually following a couple of his rules, like not drinking calories, and avoiding “white” carbohydrates along with eating small regular meals.

The majority of my weight is all in my gut. And I know that calorie based drinks are the worst for you. And I know that the majority of my weight gain has been from drinking 4-5 sodas everyday. The sugar in sodas isn’t processed very well by your body, and usually gets stored as fat much quicker than foods. Combine that with the fact that I’ve been behind a desk since I got home, working on this blog and my other projects, and there is the formula for weight gain.

All I know is I’m really craving some stinking soda right now folks. :(

I managed to exercise 6/7 days last week! Was stoked! Hoping to make at least 5/7 days this week. Plus, I'm eating at home now, nomore diet soda every other day or a Taco Bell lunch.

I'm noticing a difference and hope to keep it up. It IS hard work, Mike, but totally worth it!

I got up to 210 pounds on my 5 foot 8 frame and I climb mountains so of course I clicked on your post. Plenty of us fatties climb 10,000 foot peaks so you still have a mountain climbing career in you.

I also have been cutting weight and have lost 5 pounds with really slight changes to my eating but a much more disciplined approach. Previously, I would get 1 or 2 pastries with my coffee per week and tell myself, hey it's just 1 or 2, no big deal. As you could guess, 1 or 2 adds up. I kept the regular excercise and eliminated irregular eating. I haven't been just eating salads for lunch but I make sure not to splurge. As a result, it's pretty sustainable. I read that you need to consume 3800 calories less than typical intake to lose a pound so I'm going long-term.

Awesome another fellow climber. I’d rather just be in shape. I bought a bunch of new pants and now they barely fit, lol.
