Sometimes you have to have a hard shell. It hurts coming from loved ones, but often times, they are the people you have to ignore. Their the ones who will most likely be the first to put down your dreams because they don't want you to get hurt or fail.

Great blog, this is totally encouraging because I am always meeting people who depreciate my ideas or don't think I can do it... sometimes it gets to me but you are right I shouldn't let it!

Cheers!

Hey everyone, I thought I would weigh in here and echo some of what you are already saying, as well as offer my own perspective... I had the opportnity to spend some time with a Peer Advisory Coach by the name of Chuck Blakeman last year. (http://blog.teamnimbuswest.com/) In our time together, he shared a powerful illustration about parachutes... If you get on a plane, with a parachute, and the pilot dies, what are you going to do? JUMP! However, if you don't have a parachute, what are you going to do? You are going to learn to land a plane.... His suggestion for business success: Cut the parachute. We as humans are wired for success. We are created by design to overcome as long as we have enough motivation. (fight or flight) Another thing Chuck shared with us was this Marine Corp Motto: "Bad Plans Carried Out Violently Often Yield Good Results. Do Something."

The bottom line is this, the faster you make mistakes, the more time you will have to recover... Remember this saying: "The opportunity of a lifetime only lasts during the lifetime of the opportunity." It is VERY possible to over plan.

That said, I am NOT suggesting that you be stupid– it is wise to count the cost. However, remember this too... Bravery is being the only one who knows you're afraid.

I could go on and on sharing personal experiences in this area, but I don't know how much it would really expound on what others are saying here... (If you are interested, just let me know.) My personal recommendation: "Count the cost, Check your gut, and then- GO FOR IT!"

I love that quote by Will Smith, Rasheed!

Mike, what you did, takes a lot of guts. Was it hard for you to quit? I know I'm on the fence, but I have a "plan" and a deadline to take care of.

I don't want to get myself in a position where all my savings will be spent. I'd rather wait a few more months and save more $$ and have a plan, rather t han risk it all prematurely and fall into debt or something horrible.

But yes, you have to stay true to yourself and do what you need to do :)

Valerie,

Here is something I share with others who ask about a backup plan.

"There is no need for a plan B. It distracts you from the plan A." --- Will Smith

My backup plan was that I'd get another job if it didn't work out. I pretty much quit cold turkey and that's not much of a backup plan.

You know you can't be double minded in what you do, if you straddle the fence you'll never fully succeed. It's like you said, you lose your focus. You've got to be 100% committed to what you are focused on.

One of the biggest problem for me is that I always have one foot in and one foot out... and maybe that's why I don't trust myself completely. I'm pretty headstrong and I always aim to do what I want, but in the back of my head I have all that family guilt swimming around and I feel like I always have to have a back-up plan so I don't worry my family so much. The result: I end up juggling too many things at one time (just in case on of them don't work out) and it does make me lose focus on ALL of them.

When you quit your job and went on to start your business, did you have a back up plan or did you just go cold turkey?
