The Art of Self Motivation

You know it’s easier to stay up than it is to get up. For the past couple of months I’ve been wearing myself out, and not keeping up with things that I really should be. For example, when I wrote my article Fatties Don’t Climb Mountains; I made the declaration that I was going to give up caffeine and get my weight in check.  Well so much for that, because that lasted about a week. The reason why it didn’t last was lack of proper motivation and discipline.  For the past two weeks however I’ve been attempting to correct my lack of motivation. And so far it’s going great. Let me outline my success so far.

I started rereading Think & Grow Rich, and I’ve been following the steps outlined in the book. The second activity I’ve been doing that is impacting me the most is physical exercise. Yup. I gave up the soda and I’ve been getting up every morning and jogging/walking. I’ve been increasing my distance too. Today I walked a total of 5.70 miles for example. And I feel great. The third thing I’m doing is trying to form a new sleep habit. Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise as the old adage goes. Well it’s 100% true.   It’s a lot easier to be positive and focused when your physically healthy. When your body is healthy, your mind will start to get healthier. You’ll be able to focus easier on tasks. Fourth activity I’m doing is reading a statement out loud to myself, once in the morning and once in the evening. Check out the video below:

And finally the fifth activity I’m doing is READING. What good will it do me if I work out and put junk into my brain. So many people who are health minded are not health minded about their most important asset, THEIR MIND. So I am attempting to improve my mentallity by reading books that help me grow and by listening to motivational speakers, such as Zig Ziglar.

You see it’s easier to stay up than it is to get up. A plane generally expends the most fuel and energy getting off the ground and making altitude till it reaches cruising altitude. It’s the same with us, I tried a couple of times without putting the necessary energy into getting myself off the ground and failed. But if you put the right amount of energy into it, you’ll notice results in your life within the first week. I surely am.

Sometimes you need a “group” to help you self motivate. I’ve had a similar issue you did, I kept declaring that I would get into shape give up bad foods etc. I’d do it for a week or two or three and then I’d fall off the horse. I think I was ashamed to admit that I just had so much going on it was easy for some things (like my health) to fall by the wayside.

I found the right trainer, who teaches a class (That unfortunately has to be at 4:30 am) but she’s amazing and keeps me self motivating to get up every morning and go to her class. And the people there are so supportive it’s not your typical class where everyone has a pole up there butt and won’t talk with anyone. Everyone is friends to some degree and the welcome you in when you are new.

Now I’m self motivating to get up in the morning, but it is the group that holds me somewhat accountable, and it is the energy put forth by my trainer Erin that is the third and most important hidden ingredient. She’s dedicated to me, so need to be dedicated to myself.

That’s awesome Leah! YES, you know in one of my other blog posts I talked about Quixtar and the whole leadership team thing, well I kind of miss that. But I have just recently gotten plugged into a Mastermind Group, I’ll probably write about that shortly as a follow up to this, but it’s so important to surround yourself with people who are going in the same direction as you. It really helps. Just like you said.

And if you’re surrounded by people going nowhere, chances are you aren’t going anywhere either.

That’s one of the problems I had, I’ve been working since I started my business to change my associations. I’ve really distanced myself from all of my old friends, and really can only say I have my wife and 2 guy friends Troy and Will right now. But that’s because I want to plug in with the right people.

Mike, that all sounds wicked. I’m doing the same thing right now. I’ve always been pretty active but wanted to step it up a notch and really get fit and strong and it’s going well but I could definitely push it. I’m also trying the no caffeine thing. It’s been almost 2 weeks and it’s still tough. Hard part is that it’s a habit of sitting at the computer and working. I feel like I need to drink coffee. When I’m not near the computer I don’t think about it.

I think we should do some messaging back and forth to keep each other motivated. Much easier if someone else is in it for the long haul as well.

    Good luck!

Awesome Ross, you know with my business that’s the same thing that happens. They say you gain weight when you get married, but I’ve always been very active. But after I got married I started my web development business, and was sitting in front of a computer eating junk and drinking energy drinks galore. I went from a size 31inch waist and 145lbs to who knows and 180lbs. I’m ashamed, cause none of my pants fit right now. Only a few pairs of shorts. So fair I’ve lost 10lbs, but I need to go another 10 before I can fit my pants again. GRRR. Also, check this, I built a standing desk, this way I’m not sitting. I read a fitness article that talked about how incredibly bad it is to sit all day, and how your body burns almost zero calories sitting. I can’t say that standing has helped me loose weight, because I’ve been standing for two months, but I bet will most likely help me maintain my weight lose afterwards.
